Houston:
A new study suggests that juice made from neem leaves may
hold real promise in the fight against pancreatic cancer. Researchers found
that it can slow down the growth and spread of cancer cells—without harming
normal, healthy cells in the process.
The key lies in a natural compound found in neem leaves
called nimbolide. Scientists tested it on pancreatic cancer cells as
well as in mice, and the results were striking. Not only did nimbolide suppress
tumor growth, it also appeared to stop cancer cells from spreading to other
parts of the body—all while leaving healthy cells unaffected.
Researchers described the findings as encouraging. Rajkumar
Lakshmanaswamy of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso
said the effects of nimbolide were “surprising.” According to him, the compound
reduced the ability of pancreatic cancer cells to invade other tissues by
nearly 70 percent. That matters, because it’s this invasive behavior that
allows cancer to spread.

Beyond limiting spread, nimbolide also helped shrink both
the number and size of cancer cells. In some cases, it even triggered the death
of those cells. “From multiple angles, nimbolide appears to be attacking
pancreatic cancer,” Lakshmanaswamy explained.
Pancreatic cancer remains one of the deadliest forms of the
disease. Survival rates are particularly grim—after diagnosis, about 94 percent
of patients do not live beyond five years. Effective treatment options are
still limited, which makes the search for new therapies urgent.
Another researcher, Ramadevi Subramani, pointed out that
neem has long been used in India and is generally considered safe, with few
known side effects. If further research supports these findings, neem-based
treatments could offer an alternative that avoids some of the harsh side
effects often associated with chemotherapy and radiation.
